MVL falls as Spiderman does heroics

Thursday, July 8th, 2004

Events like this make me wish I had all my money in index tracking funds or ETFs. I thought MVL would see an increase due to the performance of Spiderman 2, but the shares fell more than 5%. Ouch!

Marvel and Spiderman

Tuesday, July 6th, 2004

Last time I owned Marvel, the stock went up when Spiderman (the forst one) did well at the box office. Box office success doesn’t translate directly into more money for Marvel, but more success should mean more licensing agreements for toys and video games and maybe other a Spiderman 3 or movies based on other Marvel Comic Book characters.

Anyway, the markets open soon and Spiderman 2 is coming off a record box office performance. It will be interesting to see what happens to MVL stock. I predicted earlier that good news for Spiderman 2 would be good news for MVL stock.

MLS dividend approaching

Sunday, July 4th, 2004

I wrote about 3 stock ideas not too long ago, two of which I invested in: CHA (China Telecom) and MLS (Mills Corp.). As the ex-div date for MLS approaches, the stock seems to be in a general uptrend.

Dog bite and insider selling – OVTI

Sunday, July 4th, 2004

Sorry to take such a long time between posts. My dog bit my nose last week and sent me to the ER. Things are slowly getting back to normal , not only for me, but also for OVTI.

Before I say anything else, I’d like to point out how despicable it is that insiders sold so may shares before the restatement sent stock prices plummeting. I hope there is a full SEC investigation because it’s very hard for me to believe that the insider sells were some sort of accident. I wouldn’t be surprised if they know a restatement was coming and acted on that information illegally. This makes me question the integrity of OVTI executives. As a result I see any investment in OVTI as very risky.

Omnivision: Smoke and Mirrors? is an interesting article about insider selling, good financials, and increasing competition. Still, OVTI has an advantage over newcomers and may very well beat the competition.

As always the ratings are generally useless, with price targets being dropped after the share price drops. I saw an 18 dollar price target, which seems low to me.

Currently the stock trades around 14.68 although it had jumped quite a bit after the restatement that initially scared investors increased earnings.
